Discipline iii Three modalities, compared

Skin rejuvenation.

A side-by-side comparison of the three FDA-cleared modalities used to address fine lines, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, and overall surface quality.

§ 01
The category, defined

Skin rejuvenation refers to the improvement of the skin's surface and superficial layers, addressing concerns such as fine lines, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, enlarged pores, and dullness. The leading platforms work through three distinct mechanisms: fractional laser resurfacing, intense pulsed light, and gentle non-ablative fractional treatment.

The category is often confused with skin tightening, which addresses laxity through deep thermal injury. Rejuvenation operates at the surface and stimulates surface-layer renewal. The candidate, the technology, and the recovery profile are different.

i.
Fraxel® DUAL
Fractional 1550/1927 nm
ii.
IPL photofacial
Intense pulsed light
iii.
Clear + Brilliant®
Gentle fractional
Mechanism
Microscopic columns of laser energy create controlled injury, surrounded by untreated tissue that drives healing.
Broad-spectrum light targets melanin and hemoglobin, addressing pigment and vascularity simultaneously.
Low-energy fractional laser resurfaces the very top layer of the dermis with minimal downtime.
Best suited for
Moderate to advanced sun damage, fine lines, scarring, textural irregularities.
Sun spots, freckles, broken capillaries, redness, and rosacea on Fitzpatrick I to III.
Maintenance, prevention, dullness, early surface aging, and post-procedure refinement.
Recovery
3 to 5 days of redness and peeling
Minimal, dark spots surface for 7 to 10 days
12 to 24 hours of pinkness
Sessions

3 to 5
4 to 6, then maintenance
Skin type range
Fitzpatrick I to IV
Fitzpatrick I to III
Fitzpatrick I to V
Editorial note

IPL is often marketed as a universal first step in skin rejuvenation, but it is not appropriate for darker skin tones, where the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rises sharply. A center operating only IPL is, by definition, unable to safely treat the full Fitzpatrick range. The serious provider has alternatives ready.
